We got pigs!

Updated: Oct 28, 2024

The priest at our new parish St.William's in London, KY invited us to introduce ourselves to the parish family after Mass in August and we shared that we are starting a Catholic Worker and a homestead in Manchester. The following week, a fellow parishioner and homesteader named Will came up to Patrick to ask if we'd like to have 2 of his pigs. They had an abundance of pigs recently and would like us to have some. We told him we'd gladly take them!

The next week we got busy preparing a stall in our barn, cleaning old hay, fixing the walls, and getting new fresh hay. When it was time to pick the pigs up, we didn't really have any animal transport or cages big enough for pigs. We showed up in our truck and told the guy we'd just put them in the back passenger seats. He didn't even flinch, so we knew we're on! Sara picked out one of the smaller male pigs, and she sat with both pigs in the back to make sure they're okay during transport. We instantly fell in love with their piggy noises.

Once we got them in their stall, they were happy to settle into their new cozy home. We think they love not having to share with so many other pigs :).

We didn't think we'd get pigs so early in our farming journey, but we just love having them! Their noises just make us laugh and they sure are fun animals to have. Plus, we love the fact that we get to save our leftovers for them.
